Here's an example of a typical "lecture heavy" lesson plan for me. The class starts with some interesting video content that is new to students and connects to a major theme at play in this part of the syllabus. For students who may be interested in this area and want to learn more, I like to mention another related, but uncovered area of scholarship (here, posthumanism.) From my perspective, this is teaching a sociology that is unabashedly sociology and vividly lucid to related disciplinary discourses (here, continential philosophy.)
It's important to note that instead of a facilitated discussion, I've substituted a question generation exercise. It involves the generation of questions first, and the review of each question generated, and subsequent commentary from other students on each question generated. After three students made a comment, we reviewed the next question. This type of exercise is intentional in its structure to solidify a space that co-creates knowledge. To me, this structure helps ensure that students remain engaged and interested.
